Breaking the Silence: Investing in a Safer World for Women

On November 25, the world comes together to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day that serves as a stark reminder of the injustices and suffering endured by millions of women and girls worldwide. This year, the theme “UNiTE! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women & Girls” underscores the urgency of taking concrete actions to address the root causes of violence and foster a future where every woman can live without fear.

For Stella Omaji Global Care Foundation, this theme resonates deeply with our mission to empower women and eradicate gender-based violence. As advocates for social justice, we are committed to raising awareness, providing support, and driving change.

Violence Against Women: A Global Epidemic

Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally. According to UN Women, almost 736 million women worldwide—equivalent to 1 in 3—have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their lives. This alarming statistic is not just a number; it represents lives disrupted, families torn apart, and communities weakened.

In Nigeria, the picture is equally grim. A study by NOIPolls in collaboration with the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) found that 1 in 4 women has experienced some form of violence, with domestic violence being the most reported. Yet, the stigma surrounding gender-based violence often silences survivors, leaving many without recourse to justice or support.

The effects of violence ripple through every aspect of society. Survivors face not only physical and emotional scars but also economic disadvantages, as violence often impedes their ability to work, learn, and thrive.

Why Investment is Crucial

The UNiTE campaign highlights a critical gap: insufficient investment in preventing and addressing violence against women and girls. Shockingly, only 5% of global aid is dedicated to tackling gender-based violence, with less than 0.2% directed toward prevention efforts.

Investing in prevention is not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity. Research shows that the cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of proactive measures. For every dollar invested in preventing violence, societies save multiples in healthcare costs, lost productivity, and legal proceedings.

Prevention strategies include:

  • Education and Awareness: Teaching communities about the harmful effects of violence and promoting gender equality.
  • Legislation and Enforcement: Strengthening laws to protect women and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.
  • Support Services: Providing accessible counseling, legal aid, and shelters for survivors.

At Stella Omaji Global Care Foundation, we recognize the power of these interventions. Our programs focus on empowering women, fostering community dialogue, and advocating for systemic change.

Our Commitment to Change

As an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities, Stella Omaji Global Care Foundation is at the forefront of efforts to combat gender-based violence in Nigeria. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Community Outreach Programs

We organize workshops and seminars to educate communities about the importance of gender equality and the devastating impact of violence against women. By challenging harmful cultural norms and stereotypes, we aim to shift mindsets and foster a culture of respect and equality.

Support for Survivors

Survivors of violence often face immense barriers to accessing help. Our foundation provides counseling, legal aid, and safe spaces where women can heal and rebuild their lives. We also collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure survivors receive the medical attention they need.

Advocacy for Policy Reform

Systemic change requires strong advocacy. We work with policymakers, local leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen laws protecting women and girls. Our goal is to ensure that these laws are not just written but enforced effectively.

Empowerment through Skills Training

Economic independence is a powerful tool in preventing violence. By offering skills training and entrepreneurship programs, we empower women to achieve financial stability, reducing their vulnerability to abuse.

Spotlight on Nigeria: A Case for Action

In Nigeria, deeply rooted cultural and societal norms often perpetuate gender-based violence. Practices such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, and domestic violence remain prevalent in some communities, despite legal prohibitions.

However, progress is being made. Initiatives like the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act provide a legal framework for addressing gender-based violence. Yet, implementation remains a challenge, particularly in rural areas where awareness is low and resources are scarce.

At Stella Omaji Global Care Foundation, we are bridging this gap by bringing our programs to underserved communities. By partnering with local leaders and leveraging grassroots networks, we ensure that even the most marginalized women have access to support and resources.
