The Read Ease Project, a collaborative effort between the Stella Omaji Global Care Foundation and the LEA School, has blossomed beautifully in the Karasana 2 community. Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed not only a growing love for reading amongst the children but also the establishment of a strong foundation of trust and connection.
This blog post delves into some of the key strategies we’ve employed to build rapport with the children and foster a safe and welcoming learning environment.
Creating a Welcoming Space: More Than Just Books
From the very beginning, we understood that creating a successful reading program goes beyond simply providing books and resources. It’s about creating a safe space where children feel comfortable, respected, and encouraged to explore the world of literature.
Our dedicated team, led by Programs Coordinator Ojone Faith Aduku, plays a pivotal role in achieving this. They greet each child with a warm smile and a kind word, fostering a sense of belonging from the moment they walk through the door. The classroom itself is a vibrant space adorned with colorful charts, student artwork, and comfortable seating arrangements, creating an inviting atmosphere conducive to learning.
Building Trust Through Open Communication
Open communication is another cornerstone of our approach. We actively listen to the children’s needs and concerns, addressing them with empathy and understanding. This two-way dialogue allows us to tailor our activities and address any challenges they might be facing.
For example, during an initial meeting with the children, some expressed apprehension about reading aloud in front of their peers. In response, we implemented a “buddy reading” program, where students can pair up and read together, building confidence and fostering a sense of collaboration.

Celebrating Individuality and Cultural Heritage
The Read Ease Project embraces the rich cultural tapestry of the Karasana 2 community. We incorporate stories and folktales that reflect the local culture and traditions, allowing children to connect with the reading materials on a deeper level. Additionally, we encourage them to share their own stories, songs, and games, fostering a sense of pride in their heritage and creating a truly inclusive learning environment.
The Power of Play: Building Rapport Through Games and Activities
Games and activities are powerful tools for building rapport and creating a fun learning experience. We’ve incorporated a variety of interactive games that not only reinforce literacy skills but also allow children to express themselves creatively and bond with their peers.
A popular activity is “Storytelling Scavenger Hunt.” After reading a story together, we hide clues around the classroom that relate to different characters, plot points, or settings. The children work together in teams to find the clues, solidifying their comprehension of the story in a playful and engaging way.
The Journey Continues: Growing Together
Building trust and connection with the children of Karasana 2 is an ongoing process. However, the progress we’ve made thus far is truly heartwarming. We’ve witnessed a shift from initial hesitation to genuine excitement and a growing love for reading.
The journey ahead promises to be filled with further learning, exploration, and the joy of discovery. We invite you to join us in this transformative endeavor. Your contributions, whether through volunteering your time, donating books, or supporting our digital resource fund, will play a vital role in shaping a brighter future for the children of Karasana 2.
Stay tuned for further updates on the Read Ease Project as we continue to build bridges of literacy and connection within the Karasana 2 community!
